I spent $90 on pizza and beer today

Like everybody else, the pandemic is "top of mind" 24 x 7 for me. I'm writing to help myself not internalize all of it. You can find other posts in the series at https://odonnellweb.com/pelican/tag/coronavirus.html

Observed at Home Depot today - guys (and it was all dudes) walking in with their children, nobody wearing a mask. We did curbside pickup, so I didn’t go into the store, but I didn’t see a single employee wearing a mask either. I’m expecting a spike in Covid-19 cases in a couple of weeks from all the dumb fuckery I’ve been seeing. We also went down to Careytown, which is the trendy hipster part of town, to pick up a puzzle from the game store there. Careytown was a ghost town. Careytown is solidly blue, the Home Depot is in Hanover County, where they had 2 KKK demonstrations last summer. Draw your own conclusion.

We also did takeout dinner for the first time since we started the lock-in by picking up a pie and wings at our favorite local pizza joint. Their business was 90% takeout before the crisis, so I don’t think much has changed for them. They seemed busy as hell. No employees there wearing masks either. Also stopped by my favorite brewery to pick up some beer. I’m all about supporting local businesses, especially when they sell pizza and beer. The brewery owners were wearing masks.

I spent $100 on those three errands. Home Depot only got $8. We are living large at Casa de ODonnell, this weekend anyway. And yes, I know we are fortunate to be in a position to splurge on food and beer. My mental health needed it. Also, hot dogs are on the menu for dinner tomorrow, so the spluge lasts exactly one night.

Lacking any real enforcement ability, the US is depending on mass voluntary compliance to flatten the curve. If that doesn’t scare the hell out of you we probably shouldn’t be friends.

100% of the people protesting against social distancing are white people that claim to be pro-life. Think about that, if you can without your head exploding. Also, these “protests” are not spontaneous or grassroots. They are being coordinated by right wing groups, probably at the direction of Trump’s re-election bid. Hopefully it backfires spectacularly, both politically, and by some of these human shit bags suffering greatly and maybe even dying from the virus. Yep I went there. If you are advocating for endangering the entire community because you are a selfish lout I got no problem with hoping that you suffer. I’m even happy to pay for the national healthcare that will shove the ventilator down your throat. (Is that how they work? I actually have no idea.)

If you are interested in what coming out of the full lockdown might actually look like, this article is the best I’ve seen at explaining how it might really work.

I like hearing from readers, all three of you! Nobody comments on blogs anymore, and I'd rather not use Facebook or Twitter as a comment system so it's back to the email.
