I Should Have Walked a Little Farther

No Guns Allowed on The Battlefield

I found the no guns allowed sign on the site of ones of the greatest slaughters in US History to be somewhat ironic.

It was 70 degrees and blue skies today. I decided that instead of watching Purdue get blown off the field by Ohio State I would go for a hike. So Breck and I hit Spotsylvania Battlefield, to walk the 7 mile trail through the battlefield. It was a gorgeous day for a hike, and the park was mostly empty so we got to enjoy the peace and quiet of the trails while we contemplated the atrocities that occurred on the very ground we were walking.

Pictures.

I peeked at the football score on my phone once, and Purdue was winning 13-7 in the 2nd quarter. We were amused but content in knowing it was a mirage and that Purdue would be down by 30 by the time we got home. We arrived home late in the 3rd quarter just as Purdue scored to make it 20-14. We still didn’t believe.

Purdue built an 8 point lead, intercepted a pass, and had the ball with 3 minutes left and OSU only had 1 timeout. A single first down would secure the victory. Purdue didn’t really even try for the first down. They ran 3 very predictable and safe plays and punted it back to OSU with 1 minute left. At this point I started to believe.

And OSU’s 2nd string QB drove down the field and threw a TD pass with 3 seconds left, then converted the 2 point conversion to tie the game, which they won in OT.

I should have gone for a longer hike.
