Save The Internet

The evil telco and cable overlords are once again trying to overthrow the principal of net neutrality. This video is maybe the most cohesive and easily understandable explanation of the issue that I have seen. If you are wondering how this jibes with my libertarian leanings, that is easy. The Internet was initially taxpayer finances, and the telcos have continued over the years to receive huge subsidies and tax breaks to expand their networks. In short, we paid for the infrastructure, so we should all have equal access.

Funny how you feel compelled to include a “why this is libertarian” disclaimer. The problem is, your net neutrality argument can be used against any profession or property holder. For example, socialized medicine is justified because doctors are trained in government-subsidized hospitals. Or maybe the fact that you get a tax deduction for your children (dependents) justifies mandatory schooling? The list is endless.

State intervention only breeds more state intervention. The solution is to reduce–and eventually eliminate–the amount of intervention. It sure as hell isn’t consistent with any philosophy based on individual rights, however.
