The Joy of Small Music Clubs

As mentioned previously, we celebrated St Patrick’s Day by attending The Kennedys show at Jammin Java, where I partook of Harp Lager and some damn fine chili. The opening act was Parthenon Huxley, who was also very good. Towards the end of his set Huxley called a friend up onto stage to sing a song they had just written together.

The friend was Kalan Porter, who we learned after the song was the 2004 Canadian Idol winner. While he was singing (and he has an amazing voice) I was thinking to myself…I wonder why this guy hasn’t tried the American Idol route.

Update: Wow – I had no idea how popular I was going to get among Canadians :) To answer the questions from the comments – they played one song, with P. Huxley accompanying Kalan on acoustic guitar. The song was sort of a pop ballad, although I think it could go in more of a rock direction depending on the arrangement Kalan and P. Huxley decide on. And for those of you asking about his hair…it is much longer and straighter than when he won Canadian Idol.

Wow! I am one of Kalan’s Canadian fans and he is indeed awesome! I hope you enjoyed the song he performed with Parthenon (who he is working with on his next CD). Can you give us some feedback about the song they sang? Rock? Ballad?

This is exciting, thanks for posting. What type of song did they sing? I am a Kalan fan, from his home town. We have heard a lot of talk about his possible collaboration/working with P Huxley, it is nice to see someone got to hear firsthand

We can’t wait till the release of his new CD and are looking forward to the Juno awards where he has been nominated for 3 awards. The thing I love most about Kalan (next to his voice) is his kind and gentle spirit. He is so genuine and nothing ever goes his head. Hope you will see more of Kalan in the States very soon!

Thanks for the update. I’m glad you enjoyed Kalan’s performance. Watch for the new album to be released in August, 2006. Not only an amazing singer, he’s an accomplished violinist, violist, plays a mean fiddle, guitar and piano. And, umm, he has quite an avid fanbase! :)

I’ve enjoyed your site, Chris. Very interesting and you sound like a great dad!

I’m so glad that others outside of Canada are beginning to see how marvelous “Our Kalan” truly is! He has a large fan base from the very young to even older people and everyone in between. I singled him out the very lst time I heard him sing and have to say that his outstanding musical talent is equivalent to his down to earth, humble, wise, and beautiful personality he is. When I went to his lst concert I thought I’d be the oldest there, being able to be Kalan’s mother but was shocked to see many women in their seventies enjoying his music as much as the teen crowd and those my age.

Parthenon, you have no idea what excitement your most welcoming news has brought to each of us! There are no words to convey just how proud we are of Kalan. We adore him. As you can see, he is a very special gem indeed and will be cherished for years to come!

Kalan won my heart from the outset of CI2 during his first audition. That voice!! Captivating! When he plays his violin, woah! watch out!!

Kalan’s a “Phenomenal Virtuoso!” The emotion he evokes is simply remarkable. I also love how he goes from being an “average, normal guy” off stage, to a “killer performer” on stage. ABSOLUTELY BREATH-TAKING!!

Parthenon, a heart felt “thank you” goes out to you for sharing this wonderful news of Kalan with us.

Stevie, we can’t forget to “thank you” for all that you are doing with and on behalf of our Kalan.

Kalan, I hold you dear to my heart. I’m ecstatic for you! I have no doubt that you will “WOW” the rest of the world as you have done with us. As you spread your wings to share your passion of music with them, remember to come back to us every now and again. *wink* You are well on your way, young man.
