Our kids (Ron above is my husband) have even taught themselves things I don't know. Addison is reading Steven Hawking and understands it - I'm sure Ron would too. ;) Sarah is reading a hugely thick novel about Caesar's women, Meagan has her head stuck in profesional adult cookbooks half the time, and Emma has been reading her books (unfortunately the "easy readers") to her stuffed animals, but we've been reading chapter books out loud to her half the time.
And we've taught them to question everything and revolt in their own way. :)

For most of my adult life I've been a contractor/consultant.
[I'm constantly amazed at what my kids teach themselves from books. It should go without saying that they didn't learn to read the "school way".]

Today my 7 year old counted backward from 100, hit zero and started counting negative numbers. Then he explained to me that the numbers go to infinity in each direction, because no matter what number you can name, you can always add one or negative one. I've yet to give him a formal math lesson, but he seems to be getting the pre-algebra down by osmosis. As for reading the non-school way, he doesn't read persay, but is dictating a novel to me, so I'm feeling like he's going to be just fine.
